DC2 is 7 months and still sleeping in our bedroom. We want to move him upstairs to his own room but this is next to DD's room and she is a light sleeper and as he is still waking frequently through the night this will disturb her.
At the moment, he goes to sleep in the living room with us at about 9ish, wakes for a feed at 11-11.30 and then we all go to bed. He generally has a quick cry but then settles well. He wakes several times thoughout the night and doesn't self-settle so I have to get up, replace dummy, stroke his face and hold his hand and he will go back to sleep. Once he has done this a few times, at about 4-5am, he will wake and won't go back to sleep in his crib. I take him into our bed at this point, which I hate doing, and he will then sleep for another couple of hours.
DD who is 1.5 goes to bed at 7.30pm so she can see her dad for half an hour before bedtime. Mostly she goes to sleep quickly. I was thinking of staggering bedtimes and putting DS to bed say half an hour later to give her time to settle first. Hopefully she will be sound asleep by the time we put him to bed in his room and his crying won't disturb her too much.
I don't know what to do when he wakes during the night though. How do I get him to go back to sleep without waking DD? DD sleeps very lightly and if she is woken during the night won't go back to sleep - she will generally be awake and crying and want one of us with her for a couple of hours before she will settle back to sleep. I also want him to stay in his own cot and not have to take him into our bed. DH is a heavy sleeper so I worry about him rolling onto DS and so I can't sleep once he is in with us.
I am dreading the whole moving DS to his own room but also really want our own bedroom back. I am also desperate for some sleep as I am exhausted now.
Sorry for garbled post. Did anyone else struggle with establishing a sleep routine for DC2? It was so easy with DC1 in comparison because we didn't have another child to worry about disturbing.
