Early waking in a 3.8 year old - help!

DS1 has always been an early(ish) riser - can be anytime after 6 but rarely after 6.30. We have got used to it now and have tried various methods to get him to stay in his room and play until his clock wakes up....it is very hit and miss whether he actually does though.

Anyway, it has started getting earlier - today was about 5.50. He was in a grump whilst getting ready for nursery and kept tantrumming over the slightest thing....and then he was exactly the same on the way home from nursery and for the rest of the evening - he is usually a very happy sunny boy and it is clearly because he is so tired from the early starts.

Is there anything I can do to try and get him to stay asleep for longer?? I know this has probably been asked over and over again

are the birds singing? more light coming in his window? that sudden change is likely to be an environmental factor, isn't it?
