Bedtime mayhem

My two sons 4 and 6 have shared a room since we moved to a smaller place 18 months ago. The boys are very close and generally ok in their behaviour. Since they've shared a bedroom the wonderful 7.30 pm bedtime routine has completely gone awry. Now I have jumping, screaming, and complete chaos, which I cannot control. My eldest has also become scared of the dark/being on his own, (he blames Dr Who, and whilst I am sceptical he won't even go to the loo on his own now) so sleeping on their own doesn't seem an option. My husband lies down with them until they fall asleep, which means he's in their room for 1-2 hrs every night. When I do it it often has no effect. My husband is often working in the evenings so even if I could split them up the youngest won't accept me being in the other room with the eldest. I really am at my wits end. Any advice please!
