I have a 2 wk old and it does not seem like he is awAke more than a couple of hours each day.

However much s/he wants. - that's probably not the answer you're looking for sorry! - but each baby is so different and there's no set rule - just as long as your baby doesn't sleep so much in the day that they're wide awake for too long at night.

The best thing you can do at this stage is put them down when they look sleepy and not count how much sleep they've had. They tend to settle into their own pattern by around 12-14 weeks.

There's no "should", but both of mine were awake for no more than an hour and 15 mins at a time at this age, so were probably sleeping about 18 or 19 hours in 24.

my 8 week old stills sleeps about 5 or 6 hours in the day and for the first few weeks he was only awake for about hour or 2 in the day and I was a little bit concerned then realised just to make the most of it and try not to stress about routine, put then down when they are tired, the first yawn usually best sign for me or if he starts turning away.
he doesn't settle that well in the night so spent some silly days trying to keep him more awake - waste of time and effort and also probably not that good for poor baby

my 5 week old seems to be at the other end of the spectrum and only manages around 4 hours. i really have to force her to have a nap sometimes as she'd much rather be up and feeding 24/7!
