broken sleep vs no sleep?

PavlovtheCat · 02/02/2010 09:24

broken as in 15min snatches, maybe half-hour, maybe an hour, but random, and no idea how long it might before being woken by baby crying in distress

Vs

Not bothering until you know the sleep will last at least 1 hour?

What would your preference be?

I think I would take what I could get! Have you got a newborn then?

PavlovtheCat · 02/02/2010 09:34

yep! well older newborn - 9wks, and a toddler now in nursery for the day.

He hasbeen awake and fussing since yesterday morning, wants to feed mostly, and be held, lots. through the night too. when h is trying to sleep he is fighting it and waking and crying v upset. he is very tired poor love.

although he is the calmest he has been held as if to my boob, head in my hand, body in crook of my arm, on his side. its killing mu back and i am typing one handed but he looks happy!

DH said i should get a quick power nap, but i have been attempting this since 4am, and find snatches of sleep are giving me a stinking headache. I feel better if i don't bother, in the short term...

Agree with the 'take what you can get' approach which I'm still following now with 7m old DS (argh)

Sounds like you're not getting much rest -- much sympathy and good sleeping vibes!

Bramshott · 02/02/2010 09:43

I remember DH reading an article once when DD2 was small, which said that this idea of "quality sleep" is a myth, and all that counts is the quantity - so 4 x 15 mins is just as good as 1hr solid.

PavlovtheCat · 02/02/2010 09:55

bramshot so why does it feel so crap then ?

I am for the most part doing ok sleep wise. He has started to sleep 4 hours at night, even last night, so as long as I can get to sleep straight away and DD does not wake up i can get a decent sleep. Last night i woke up thirsty so managed probably 3 hours (never thought i would hear myself say that is good!) and often, after than, i get an hour , then another hour before i get up. Day sleeping in rare, so i guess i should try to lie him down and grap a bit. Such a waste of a day though!

To add - we think he might have a sore tummy/feeling a bit off colour which is why he has been unsettled as he is restless/uncomfortable. (but now, asleep and looking sooooooooo cute i want to eat him!)

I think the argument is that while it might feel immediately crap (I always feel initially much worse if I nap in the day), in the long run it makes you feel better . Hope he settles soon.

PavlovtheCat · 02/02/2010 10:36

OK, i took a nap. I started to take a nap. DH had left the phone in here on the bed, just as i started to enter the dibble stage it rang. course it did. 10 mins i got. i give up. If i go to sleep now, i will waste the entire day. i shall have a coffee.

aw Pavlov he sounds lovely

actually i do agree with you about foregoing the very short naps in the morning, especially if you've had a few hours overnight. if up at around 4 or 5 am, i don't go back for a nap until midday, its good to be up and about in the morning i think, gives the day some structure (even if you feel like a zombie!!)

chocolaterabbit · 02/02/2010 13:57

At night I take whatever I can get.In the day I only nap if I am likely to have a good hour as otherwise I start getting anxious if I can't sleep straightaway. A long hot shower helps a little bit.

PavlovtheCat · 02/02/2010 18:29

chocolaterabbit i did that in the end (this afternoon ) i had a nice long hot shower, moisturised, did my hair, put on a little make-up (foundation, lip gloss) and swanned in to collect DD from nursery looking ever so calm and well kempt! I felt fine after that but sure i won't this evening!

DS had an enormous poo, and a couple of loud burps. He is eating too much , maybe he will sleep better this evening now he has got it all out!

AAAAAGH!

I was just about to go to bed, leave the growing/sick whatever it is going on with him boy asleep, looking nice and relaxed, in his rocker, with DH.

I literally just finish saying 'i might even get more than half hour' and he woke. And he is making hungry noises. Hungry, tired, La'ing noises. Damn!
