15 month old suddenly become hysterical before bedtime

Haven't really had many problems with our DD sleeping through the night since she was 6 months old or so, apart from the occasional half hour or so of struggling to settle; that is until the last 6 weeks or so when she's cried solidly for at least half an hour or so and has really ramped it up during the last week where she has totally been losing the plot.

She's fine right up until bedtime when she can tell bedtime is approaching (post bath and night feed when she's being put into her grobag) and turns into a little insane dervish; in turn giggling, laughing and crying hysterically in fits, throwing toys and dummies around in a seeming fit of rage whilst grabbing any ones face who is fool hardy enough to get in arms reach and pinching as hard as she can.

When she actually gets put down she is sobbing and freaking out inconsolably like I've never seen before, to the point where she is finding it hard to draw breath and has (on more than one occasion) vomited with exertion.

Can't quite get to grips with what has brought this on or what we can do to tackle it........

Tried a bit of controlled crying but the crying feels really a bit too severe and hysterical for us to leave her for very long at all.

We have a trip to Australia coming up in the next 2 weeks too, wasn't exactly looking forward to the flights before but beginning to really dread them now(!!)
