Getting my 5 wk old to settle at night

Help, we're really struggling getting our new daughter through the night. She currently wakes for a feed at around 10ish but then will not go back to sleep until around 2 - these 4 hours are accompanied by almost constant grizzling. We're not sure why she wants to be awake at this time as she's pretty good at napping through the day, then feeding and having a bit of activity time. She sleeps in a Moses basket and can settle herself sometimes (although she hasn't today)without our help, but at night it's like she's a different baby.

Has anyone got any suggestions that will help us to get her down at night?

is she breast fed? my ds was like this until about 8 weeks, so i fed him. any time he was awake and at all grizzly, fed. 5 weeks is still very new, and she probably doesn't understand night vs day yet!

we have the same problem with our 7 week dd except its at 4am, and includes her having fits of giggles... I'm going with the flow, Bf and hoping she grows out of it before I collapse from sleep deprivation! Someone suggested to me that the cot might be more comfy than a moses basket but she looks too small for her big cot!

We are having exactly the same with our 4 week old. she is great during the day and general sleeps in her basket and with very few problems. However, when it come to the evening she turns into a different baby and just will not settle and cries and cries. with our LO it is generally trying to get her to sleep after early evening feed (about 7ish). Usually when she wakes in the night she goes off to sleep ok, and is fine during the day; just can't understand why she is so different in the evening!!

Dear Bex
Sounds like evening colic. Go to NHS Choices got good info there.

Thanks for all the reply's I tried breast feeding her last night everytime she was upset and she settled much better without all the crying. However it did mean that I fed her every hour and half, so wasn't much better in terms of my sleep! It's reassuring to know that it won't last forever though and I look forward to the day that she giggles at me no matter what the time is!
