Calling all co-sleepers - How do your DC's sleep?

We've been co-sleeping with 8.5mo DD pretty much since birth, as she wakes between 4 and 10 times a night for a feed and a cuddle.

The past few weeks this has escalated to every 20 mins or so, and we're totally shattered!! She's also teething (we think - no teeth yet but she's dribbling and has a vvv runny nose) which doesn't help, and DH starts a new job soon so needs to be on top form.

My question is - before we try something drastic like CC or giving up BF - if you co-sleep, does your DC sleep through the night? Are your DCs generally breastfed? We would hate to stop BF or co-sleeping, I absolutely love it, but can't carry on being a daytime zombie 'cos of nighttime sleeplessness... If moving DD into her room and starting her on formula is what it'll take for us all to get a good six hours, then that's what I'm prepared to do. Help please!!

Hi,

I completely sympathise!! Im going through a similar situation with my BF and co-sleeping 9 month DS.

He wakes up every night as well. On a good night its 2 or 3 times, on a bad night its every hour (and i'm only counting the wakings after I go to bed at 11, he wakes up a few times before that as well!!)

Even i was wondering if it was co-sleeping and BF that was causing the issue but have no wish to go onto formula so I am sticking with it.

All I can say is, it does get better!! it sounds like your DD is going through an uncomfortable time, they do wake up a lot more at this time. But it is usually only for a limited period of time. Sorry I cant give you any other advice!

Hang in there!

gecko co slept exclusively from birth (no idea why we put the cot together tbh lol)

but we moved her into a bed when she was about 2.2 I think
but that just meant that she went to sleep in her own bed(with boob to go to sleep) and then I go and feed her in her bed when she wakes until I go to bed and then the next time she wakes I bring her in with me

she is 2.11 and stills feeds about 6 times a night

22mo ds has co-slept with us since about 4mo(don't know why i persisted with the cot for 4 months!!)

he was, and still is, cuddled to sleep every night and he has been sleeping really well since about 12mo, he still wakes a few times a night though, i think sleeping through is an urban myth!

he is going to have to go to his own bed soon as dc2 is due in june but i will still cuddle him off to sleep.

no idea about bfing though, ds was ff.

My DD is 2.9 and has co-slept with me since birth. She has had phases of being unsettled and waking to feed every hour; and phases of sleeping through.

It sounds like your DD is either teething or coming down with something, suggesting that even if you put her in a cot and stopped BF you would still be spending most of the night with her- probably on her bedroom floor.

No practical suggestions I'm afraid except to say it's probably a phase and will pass
