DS(4) waking up each night

My ds has recently started to wake up several times each night,it started off a few weeks ago when he was having bad dreams and he seems to have got into a habit of waking up.He will get out of bed and stand at our door and chatter away till one of us(me)puts him back to bed (repeat several times each night)We do not talk to him and have recently started to put him on loo when we went to bed to try to stop the cycle of waking. This worked for a couple of nights.
I am considering taking him through to the toilet everytime he gets up in the hope that he will not want to visit the freezing cold bathroom, and he will want to stay in his lovely cosy bed. I am not bringing him in to our bed as none of us will get sleep then.
Has anyone else gone through anything similar, and what did you do
Thank you for reading this far!

My ds is 3 and has been waking several times a night for months. Think it began shortly after 5 month old dd arrived but am so sleep deprived I can't really remember!

He is still in a nappy at night so not the same situation as your ds - I think he is waking from cold as he kicks his duvet off despite all our desperate attempts to staple it to the bed (haven't actually used staples yet, but probably only a matter of time...). We have used a 3-6yr grobag for the last couple of nights and he has woken a lot less.

So probably not any help at all but I have a lot of sympathy as it is slowly killing me, especially as dh usually fails to hear him and I am also feeding dd!
