How much should a 12 week old baby sleep during the day?

DS is a really good sleeper at night, normally goes for 10 hours and has done so for a few weeks now. However, he doesn't sleep a lot during the day, and I'm wondering if I don't give him enough opportunities? He's usually in the same room as me all day, and I am starting to think maybe I should be trying to have a 'nap schedule' or something. Once or twice I've tried putting him on his own in the hammock (where he sleeps at night), and he does fall asleep. He occasionally falls asleep in his bouncer or on my boob, but not for longer than 15-20 minutes.

Help please? I'm sure I read somewhere he should be getting a lot more sleep than this. Should I just start putting him down on his own a few times a day regardless of whether he seems tired? How long do babies this age (12 weeks) normally nap? and how often?

DS is 11 weeks and I started putting him in his cot twice a day about 2 weeks ago because he would fight sleep all day until about 4pm when he would fall into an exausted sleep on my chest. He usually goes down awake but sleepy, and will settle 9 times out of 10. If he cries I pick him up straight away and dont try to make him settle. He usually sleeps on and off for an hour and a half before he will call for me. Not sure how much sleep they need, but have learnt that even if they fight it they definately need it! Took me a while though poor boy! (there is a thought that babies who dont sleep much in the day are very clever, so maybe we just have baby einsteins in the making?!)

Daffodilli your theory might be right! My DS1 was a NIGHTMARE with day time sleep, and was even very alert as soon as he was born and would get over tired. He is on the gifted and talented register now aged 6 Those hours and days and weeks of hell were worth it!!
