Big bed questions

DS (2years 3 months) has recently transferred quite successfully to his big boy's bed. We are using the old cot mattress instead of a rail, and have a spare single mattress on the floor in case he comes out. Can people tell me how long they kept up these sort of measures?

Also, can anyone advise on a bedside light for this age? Or would you still advise against it, given that pressing any available knobs is still a major pastime ...

We didn't do any of that ds was about the same age too. We just shoved him in the big bed and that was it! He fell out a lot in the first couple of weeks then got used to it. We used to hear a "thud" then stomping then ds would appear by our bed and get in for a cuddle We don't have a bedside lamp at all yet and he now 2.10
