extreme midnight tantrums!

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can advise or has experienced something similar. Our DD, 19 mos, has had a couple of mega-tantrums in the middle of the night recently. She quite often wakes up during the night anyway, and I usually just go to her and she goes back to sleep fairly quickly.

However... on these occasions she has just got really, really, cross - thrashing around, trying to evade my attempts to pick her up, pushing me away. She will scream and cry so hysterically that she develops a kind of tic. The only remedy has been to turn on 'in the night garden' DVDs at 2 am, which seems to distract her enough to get her back in bed.

I'm not sure these are night terrors because she is awake during them and responds to questions through her sobs - all in the negative of course..

Any ideas as to what's going on?!
