Sorry, this is likely to be long as I'm going to try and give all info up front. (Hate those threads where iy gradually trickles out!)

Background
DS was born in May by CS. He instantly latched well to feed but wanted to feed almost constantly. I realised this was quite normal for a newborn but the second night in hospital, neither of us got much sleep and the next morning MW set us up to co-sleep for a few hours so I could get some rest. She said it wasn't policy to do so but she could see it was needed. It worked really well.
First night home we really struggled so the second night tried co-sleeping again and again it worked really well so we continued.
DS continued to need constant feeding and didn't gain weight so I felt really pressurised to feed well so he could put on weight. I was determined to continue excl BF so stuck with the co-sleeping to ensure the weight went on.
When he was a month old he was finally diagnosed with a tongue tie. By this time he'd dropped drom 75th centile at birth to 2nd centile. Fortunately he was happy and healthy in every other way and from when he had his tongue tie sorted he started putting on weight and now - at 21 weeks - is back up to 25th centile and still excl BF.
At 10wks, we moved his cot next to my side of the bed and took the side off so my mattress was immediately next to his with the aim of gradually getting him to sleep there.
We're now in the situation where he will - on a good night - sleep in his cot for the first 2 or 3 hrs before rolling from his mattress to mine. If I feed him and try and put him back in his cot asleep, he wakes up and cries and DH says "Just bring him into bed".
The other issue is that due to the co-sleeping, he is used to feeding to sleep and has only ever fallen asleep whilst feeding or in the car and a couple of times out walking in the buggy.
Finally, the other thing that's brought this to a head is that he's just got his 2 bottom teeth and as he falls asleep on me, he's catching me with his teeth. Not quite a bite but enough for me to feel the pain.

What I want to achieve

  • him sleeping in his cot overnight
  • him settling himself to sleep
and ultimately
  • him being able to have a daytime nap in his cot
  • him sleeping through

My plan
The next couple of days I have stuff going on so Wednesday, DH will put the side of the cot back on and from Wed evening,

  • I will do a bedtime routine with a feed, bath, change into vest and gro-bag and final feed.
  • As DS starts to fall asleep, I will delatch him and put him down on his back in his cot.
  • If he doesn't settle, I'll repeat the final feed and last step. I'll only repeat this once though.
  • If he still doesn't settle, I'll try pick up, put down method

My questions

  • Does my plan make sense?
  • What time do you think I should do his bedtime routine? Currently he falls asleep on me at about 9pm and them has another feed around 10pm which he falls asleep on and gets transferred onto his mattress.
  • I think consistency is key but if it gets to 3am and neither of us has had any sleep, do I persist with pick up, put down?
  • Any other tips?
  • Anyone likely to be around in the early hours of Thurs morning to help me stay strong? (DH and I have agreed he will sleep in the spare room whilst I get this sorted).

Really not looking forward to doing this but I know in the long run, once it's cracked, it will be much better.

That is true maybe I'll keep feeding for now and try to get him going longer once he is established on solids.
He's in the middle of his nightly screaming session. DH has been in 3 times and I've been up once so hopefully he will stop soon.
My dilemma for the week-
It's DHs 30th birthday on Sat so we are having party here on Friday night. I have told people to come at 7.30 but one lot of friends are coming early as they have a DS same age as my DD so we will bath them and put him to sleep here so they can party with us. Do I still make my DS fall asleep himself or do I feed him to sleep. I don't want to feel like a bad mum in front of others nor do I want to spend ages going up and down. He does sleep well after he settles himself.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 13/10/2009 21:29

Hmm! That's a difficult one but I think any parents there will completely understand. Why not try and get him to self settle but if it takes longer than, say half an hour, then feed him. I don't think as a one off he'd get used to it.
Am v at not having to feed to sleep! Still stuck doing that here.
Tonight he's been asleep in his cot since about 7.10pm. I'm still stressing myself out though that he might wake up at any moment...

Evening, I did check in last night but ds started screaming and things went downhill from there. We had some great nights over the weekend, I spoke to the advisor on monday morning and told her I was happy with a 2am and 5 am feed. However things have unravelled a bit, last night ds woke at 10am, screamed for half an hour and I then fed him, he woke again at 3am and after a feed he just cried and cried and I then brought him into bed with me, fed again at 5am and 7am and then up for the day, exhausted...two steps forward one step back. Speaking to the advisor again tomorrow, I'm gutted that I thought all the screaming on the first three nights had been worth it but actually its so easy to get right back to that stage again. Not sure what to expect from tonight. I suppose I should be grateful that he manages to at least get to sleep and stay asleep for a few hours, this is a huge improvement on nights spent only sleeping when I'm sleeping with him.
Febes I personally would just do what you have to do to enjoy your party, you always can get back on track the following day.

FrightNightFebes · 14/10/2009 19:39

I'm the same Tomthumb one step forward 2 steps back. Last night he woke at 11pm, 3, 5, and 7. I would love it if he just dropped that 5am one thats the killer!!
Tonight he seemed to drop off easily (I did put him down sleepy but awake too) but has woken after 45mins and is now screaming I've been in once so far so I better get back to him.

TomThumbMum · 14/10/2009 19:49

one step forward two steps back, not two steps foward.....am blaming the exhaustion, agree the 5am feed is a killer! Good luck tonight, am hoping these babes get the message!

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 14/10/2009 21:02

Aaaahh! DS went to sleep at 7pm and has just woken up. I've got DH to change his nappy and he's screaming the place down - bless them both! I'm sat in bed waiting to feed. Hope he then goes down easily and we get a few hrs sleep!

Good luck to you guys tonight!

FrightNightFebes · 14/10/2009 21:09

Maybe he's teething again?? I hope your night improves Ses.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 14/10/2009 21:36

Could well be... I did give him some teething granules just after his bath.
He's just settled in his cot again so I'm going to try and get some sleep too. G'night!

FrightNightFebes · 15/10/2009 21:40

DS went straight to sleep at 6.45 tonight and hasn't woken up yet .

Do you think we have turned a corner or will it all fall apart again. Oh well I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 15/10/2009 21:48

That's fantastic Febes
Definitely enjoy it whilst you can and if that means every night from now on, so be it
How's party preparation coming along?

Our night improved last night on the bad start with usual waking & feeds at 11, 2 and 4.30. Tonight he woke after 45 mins but back asleep since 8.20 so I'm just going to bed. DH is away tonight anyway.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 17/10/2009 17:30

Febes - hope last night went well.
I'm starting to feel v disheartened re sleep routine. The norm over the last 3 nights is for O to take longer to settle (around 8pm) and then to sleep for no longer than 2hrs at a time. I almost feel as if I was better off a couple of weeks ago and dread bedtime every night.
This week we are going to Ireland to see DH's family so routine may be difficult anyway.
Feeling a bit lost in it all

FrightNightFebes · 17/10/2009 18:04

Just go with whats easy on holiday as sometimes routine in impossible and restart when you get back.

R went to sleep on his own last night at 7 and slept till 12.30 and then woke every 2 hours. So happy about the beginning of the night but the waking is very tiring. I'm starting to weaning this week. He is 5 months and its when I started DD and my mum and DH have both been telling me to so I'm going to give it a go. I wonder if it will make any difference.

He woke up with 2 teeth this morning so that might explain some of the wakings.

The party was great but I only got 3 and half hours sleep and have been busy today so am hoping for an early night tonight.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 17/10/2009 21:27

Thanks Febes. We go on Wednesday through til Mon 26th.
This evening has shown me though that he's now used to being asleep earlier as when we were still out at our neighbours' place at 8pm, he was really not happy!

TomThumbMum · 18/10/2009 17:53

Hello,
I've been too dismayed to post, we've had three truely awful nights, not sure what I've done wrong but ds cried for an hour and a half after a feed for the last two nights and just could not be settled. He has at least two feeds a night so thats a lot of crying! I'm not supposed to bring him into bed anymore and I don't want to ruin all the effort I've put in so I have been going in and out, trying to settle, which all seems pointless. I'm totally knackered. I am close to giving up and bringing him back in bed with me. The mother in law has offered to help on Tuesday afternoon so I might get some sleep then. I am struggling to find the energy to continue despite going to bed at 8.30pm last night and planning a 7pm bed tonight. DH can't help as he wants to give up everytime ds cries......
I really hope you ladies are having a better time, although two hour wakings sounds similar to what I'm experiencing.

GHOSTLYPRessenceofSES · 18/10/2009 19:08

TomThumbMum - I'm really sorry to hear you've had a rough few nights.
Max 2hr sleeps has been the norm here the last few nights and last night I did bring DS into bed at 2am as I was starting to nod off whilst feeding and was worried he'd fall.
It's so disheartening isn't it?!
I've decided that because of our trip to see DH's family in Ireland, I'm just going to keep going with what I can and then work on further progression when we're back.
I'm trying to look at the positives:

  • I now have a routine
  • DS is usually asleep by 7.30pm in his cot. (2weeks ago he'd come to bed with me at about 10pm.

I think it's easy for us all to forget the little steps of progress when all we're thinking is that we want them to spend all night in their cot and sleep through (at least 10-7!)

FrightNightFebes · 18/10/2009 19:30

Thats a great way to look at it Ses. It is disheartening and tiring- poor you Tomthumb your last few nights sound really hard. If he's crying after a feed is it wind?? Maybe teething- Have you tried calpol? I wish they could just tell us.

Well I have sightly better news. The past 3 nights DS has gone to sleep straight away and stayed asleep until 11ish but after that he has been waking every 2/3 hours. I have been feeding him so my new goal is to cut out one or two of these feeds as he isn't even hungry in the morning. I think we are going to get a few nights of crying ahead of us but at least he is better at going to sleep himself now. It took about 10 days for that to improve.

I hope you get some sleep tonight Tomthumb . I will be thinking of you .
