Newborn crying in sleep

Hi, my dd is just over 2 weeks old. She's my first child, so forgive a potentially very naieve question - she has a tendency to cry out when she's sleeping, particularly during her daytime naps. I always put her down to nap in a darkened room rather than carrying her round the house with me, but it's quite distressing hearing her cry out on the monitor. She doesn't usually wake herself up, and the cries are only short, but I wanted to know whether it's normal. Is she having nightmares or is it just wind?

imho probably just something working through her little body If she doesn't sustain the crying I wouldn't worry ... easier said than done with the first one. I know... with dd I used to dash to check on her with every whimper... now with ds... unsless he really lets rip I stay calm

Is she waking but then settling herself back down again? They have a v short sleep cycle so she will be waking fairly frequently. Congratulations btw!!
Ds did the same last night. I woke up fully expecting to need to go to him and he just went back to sleep (he is 7m).

She doesn't actually seem to be awake when she cries out. It happens in nearly every daytime nap she has, which is why it's so disconcerting. The rationale part of me just reasons that it's her digesting something but I can't help having an emotional response and worrying about whether she's having bad dreams.

nah, don't worry sounds normal to me, I remember dd always used to mipe a bit in her sleep too, just you wait until she gets growing pains, ouch!

I think babies can have bad dreams (they can dream in the womb so presumably they can have bad and good dreams) but I don't think they remember them. I totally understand your response though, I would be exactly the same.

DS used to do this too - and giggle as well.

Still does both sometimes. Had a good chuckle whilst fast asleep in the buggy yesterday!
