sleep training 7 mth old

hi all, my dd is 7 mths old and not going to sleep by herself so have started the timed method - in 1 minute, reasure, out, leave 2mins, in again, etc, but she is persistent and crying, is this awful for her and will she get get herself into a state, otherwise i have to rock her asleep or on my shoulder and dad wont do. i am at the 5 min stage tonight and shes crying.
did any of do it and how long did it take and did they cry continuously?

It is hard isn't it! Apparently it can take up to a week, and you mustn't weaken...easier said tna done. I must admit that controled crying did work for me quite easily but this was during the night, not when we put him down to sleep at night.

We used to let ds sit on the bed with us for a bit, until he fell asleep, usually during his last b/f before bed. This didn't stop until I stopped giving him breast milk at bed time, by which time he was 12 months. I have found that these things usually resolve themselves over time, and that she will not be doing this all her life!

Do what makes you happy.

thank you chincilla, she fell asleep in the 12 minute stage,went in after ,5,6,8,10 then 12 no need, dh was cringing but i stood firm , no lifting but patted her head.

with all the pseudonyms yours stands out the most to me and has created this little pic in my head of what you are like!!!like a monchichi - do you remember them? no offence intended, its just a cute name.

will now try it during the night - but that will be worse i am sure.

hi hermykne - we did sleep training with our ds at 7 months - best thing i have ever done - stick with it. It took us about 4 nights for him to stop crying at all when put down to bed.
by the way the best book i ever found on the subject and helped me enormously was called the good sleep guide by angela henderson. really short compact fab book.

Just done it with my dd (8 months next week). Started last Fri and she sleeps all night like a dream now. Still cries for 10 mins before going to sleep and wakes up for the odd 2 min snivel in the night! I too was dreading it and found it very difficult at first but it is BRILLIANT

We did it at 7.5 months too. Best time (before they can stand up or talk back). It is hard but you will not look back. Keep it up and in a few nights it will be all over. (BTW, it took us a couple of weeks so not every baby is the same!)

thanks folks , second night and the initial put down took 40 mins for her to drift off and it was in the 8 minute stage , last night it was the 12th min stage.
gave in last night after 40 mins but will definitely do it tonight, correctly.

sambo, hi
been on holidays and havent been netting it for awhile.
shes back to her old tricks and has now got two teeth, can you do c/c when they are teething?
its very difficult to know if shes actually in pain or just crying.

during the day she was good for napping by herself but now its can take a walk to get her to settle and she can be exhausted but just refuses to sleep.

hermykne, try giving your DD a dose of Calpol 20 mins before you start off her bedtime routine. That way the pain relief will have kicked in when you start and you can be confident that her crying is more of an attention grabber than one borne out of dental (or other) pain.

Good luck Hermykne. I think its definitely worth doing. A dreadful book I once read described itas 'giving your child the gift of sleep' which is gruesome (Californian perchance?) but imo actually true. Children tend to be so much happier if they can sleep well. We did the controlled crying thing with my son at about 7 months. It took 3 nights and since then he has honestly only woken up in the night about half a dozen times. He's 11! My other two had slightly less dramatic success but basically it taught them to get themselves back to sleep when they wake in the night, and most importantly to go to bed awake and get themselves off to sleep. So many toddlers and even older kids need their Mum with them to get to sleep which becomes so tiring for the Mums.
I really hope it is successful for you.

Just have to tell you that after our holiday last year. (son was 1 on holiday) He wouldn't sleep when we got home. We left him for 2 hours crying and crying for 2 or 3 nights. We went in once after a few minutes just to see he was OK and then left him. It worked. He's never done it since. It was really hard but I have to say worth it. Good Luck
