Hot bedroom - how do I cool down?!

Hi,

Am looking for advice, as my LO bedroom is dreadfully hot. This eve it was almost 30 in her room.

I have tried opening windows and closing curtains in day - to no joy.

Have fans on the go in the evenings, but doesn't seem to make impact.

Not sure what else I can do to cool LO room down - can anyone advise as worried about her overheating at nights, and that she having trouble sleeping too.

Get a blackout blind in her room and leave it closed. They are insulatedd so the keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Apart from that just loose blankets on the bed and maybe no pj's.

We have black out blinds in DD's room and they have been shut all day but its still really warm. We've put a fan on but, like you Bionic, it doesn't seem to have helped.

What are you dressing your LO in for the weather? I'm never sure how much they need on them.

Mine are in bed in just pants.

Try opening all the upstairs windows and leaving all the doors open so the air can blow through.

Another vote for blackout blinds, you need to keep them down all day.

We suffer very badly from ths problem. DSs sleep downstairs in summer. There really is no othr way for us.

Is there any way you could put LO matress on the floor of the lounge for example?

I would say 30 degrees is really too hot to be safe.

What about one of these in her room

Put a bottle of cold water or a small bowl of cold water in front of the fan and this should help cool the room down.

Open the loft hatch if you have one as warm air rises so will travel up into loft instead of staying traped upstairs

Keep all windows and doors propped open in the day to create a flow of air throughout the house

Oh I couldnt sleep if my loft hatch was open. Thhink I have seen too many scary movies.

I sleep better with it open in hot weather, I imagine all the hot air rising up and leaving a cool chilled space behind it

I have excema and hot rooms at night are my worst nightmare. I have one of them room humifiders and I put that on an hour before I go to bed and its bliss. I got mine from freecycle, might be something to think about op

There is a similar thread on the the 'products' page at the moment and someone suggests putting a cold wet towel in front of a fan to cool the air rather than circulating the hot air around, I might give that a go - might be more effective than a bottle or bowl perhaps?

Don't really want to leave windows open all day especially when we are out, and also have indoor cats that might suddenly become outdoor if they go exploring!

LO asleep in bed in just pants and thin vest, so at least she gone to sleep.

Have 2 fans blowing cool air at her so hopefully she should be ok through the night now.

hi Bionic, we have the same problem re indoor cats and hot bedroom, such a pain!

What we've started doing, as well as having blackouts down and top part of window open all day, is to shut the cats in the living room from the time DD goes to bed (7pm) until we go to bed (11pm). That way we can have all the back doors and windows open and DD's bedroom door slightly open to create a good air flow when the cool evening air starts to circulate. It's still usually 24 to 25 degrees in there when we've had a hot day, but feels relatively comfortable.

Not perfect really, especially as she has eczema.

The fan is quite a good idea though, even though your room thermometer will probably read the same as it did before, the circulating air will make it more comfortable for your DD.

How well insulated is your loft? Sounds counterintuitive but packing it with thick insulation can really help as it blocks the sun's heat.

Everyone needs mobile air conditioner units.

I demanded requested my DH to buy an air con unit when I was heavily pregnant in the last serious heatwave (summer 2006).

We have this in our bedroom (we co-sleep with the children). It has a timer and goes on for 30 minutes before the children go to bed. Maybe another 30 minutes if it gets to hot in the middle of the night.

It is expensive to run and not green but I don't care...I hate being too hot.

DON'T open the windows during the day - you'll be letting in air which will be warmer than the house and so heat the house and make it even harder to cool at night. Only open the windows once the outside temperature is lower than it is inside.
