10 week old and erratic sleep habits

DS had been doing some good long stretches at night, sometimes sleeping 6-6 with just one feed in between and straight back to sleep. But the last couple of days, although I can see he's tired, I haven't got him to sleep before 8 or 9 and then he's waking up every 2 hours or so in the night and up for the day at 6.

Daytime sleep is also a bit all over the place, but at least I can take him out for a walk and he'll sleep in this pushchair. He's napping now but it took 3 attempts - he kept falling asleep then waking up 10 minutes later screaming, then quickly back to sleep after I picked him up for a cuddle.

Evenings are hard because I'm by myself - dh works very late - and have a 4yo to feed and get to bed too.

Anyone btdt? Tips, thoughts?

He is only ten weeks - far too young to expect much consistency IMO. I know it's hard because I have a toddler as well as a 4m, but give it a few weeks and things really do start to settle down.

He's 10 weeks, don't expect routine and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks - yes, this is what I was thinking, too. Am also bf'ing on demand, which is often every hour, but I guess that will slow down a bit too with time. I seem to remember from ds1 that 4 months is when everything seemed to fall into a rhythm.

btw - haven't been expecting a routine, was just worried in case I'm doing something wrong, missing tired cues etc.

I'm sure you're not. They are just unpredictable little creatures at this age. Tough on you not having your DH around in the evenings - I practically hurl my two at DH when he walks through the door at 6!

posieparker · 15/05/2009 11:43

My only tip is do bath and a quiet story with dc1 as soon as dc2 is settled, bed can wait.
eg if at 5.15 dc2 is asleep have a little time with dc1 as you may be feeding dc2 at dc1's actual bedtime.

posieparker · 15/05/2009 11:44

prov, I read that as hurt and not hurl..... i was thinking wtf??

TheProvincialLady · 15/05/2009 11:49

I haven't hurt them yet - on purpose anyway (we'll forget the time I accidentally stood on DS1's fingers)

Thanks again. Dh has been getting in around 1am all of this week, so not much help there! When things go really well, I feed ds2 while reading a story to ds1 at bedtime, and they both fall asleep at the same time. But obviously that's not a regular occurence!

We've muddled through the first 10 weeks and I guess we can muddle through a few more :-)

He's having a growth spurt. It'll settle back down in a week or so, then he'll have another a few weeks later (around 4 months) and a huge one around 6 months.
