This one is tricky - any advice?

16 month old still wakes up a few times during the night when I am around. He goes back to sleep quickly when patted or bfed. Last week I was gone for a week for the first time since he was born -- and he slept through every single night. However, now that I am back he wakes up and screams more than ever [hmmm].
I am working, so like to be there for him in the night, especially after having been gone for a week, but what is really going on underneath? Does he need reassurance, or is it just what he is used to? I am considering to sleep in the guestroom (we co-sleep), to get him back to sleeping through, but don't want him to think I am abandoning him. He is not hungry/teething - this is really about his relationship to me.
Any thoughts? Advice?

how did you feel about the night wakings before you went away?
if you were/are happy to pat/feed him back to sleep then persoanlly i'd just go with it. he'll stop eventually.

if you feel you want to actively encourage him to sleep through, I can't see any reason why you shouldn.t
