Moving toddler from cot to bed...

Our DD1 is 21m and her baby sister (4m) will be moving out of the crib in our bedroom into the cot (currently DD1's) in a month or so - and they will be sharing a room.

We've bought a toddler bed which DD1 is very excited about - in theory! She won't sleep in it at night so we thought we'd try her in it during the day but is unable to sleep in it (tried bedrail etc etc) and has even dropped her day sleeps because of it...

Any tips?

no tips I'm afraid, other than can you get/borrow/beg another cot from anyone???

choufleur · 13/02/2009 21:02

do you have any idea why she won't sleep in it?

BubbaAndBump · 13/02/2009 21:02

I could if pushed but we were really hoping that she'd move to a bed before she had to share with sis so she doesn't associate being bumped out of cot with sis being bumped in (and it's a gorgeous little bed! )

Any other ideas?

Choufleur, I think she's unsure of the freedom - in the day she's tired but is overexcited by being able to get out of bed and run around!

Hi- we have just been through similar with ds who is 2.5. We put the bed in his room while he was still in his cot to let him get used to the idea and he would sit on it and chat about his big boys bed but come bedtime he insisted on his cot.

I'm afraid we resorted to bribery! Chart on the wall, star for every time he slept in the bed and the promise of a toy by the weekend if he slept in the bed every night. He moved into the bed that night! The first couple of nights were hard going as he kept waking up, but he's back to his normal sleep routine now and absolutely loves his big bed.

Good luck!

Ahh, good old bribery... May well just do that if all else fails (which it is currently!)

the thing is, at 21 months I, personally, think she is just a bit too young to get star charts and rewards and things like that.

all she knows is that it sin't like her cot, and she wants that secureness back.
that's not to say you shouldn't persevere with the bed, but I am not sure she is old enough to be bribed to sleep in it....

hmm Is the cot still in her room - what we did when we moved ds1 at a similar age due to ds2 needing the cot was took it down and hid it under our bed for a week or so so he HAD to sleep in the bed and then it came out as a "new" cot for ds2

BubbaAndBump · 15/02/2009 12:40

Not a bad idea Katylou, may try that! Thanks
