How to make a cot more cosy?

My 6 month old has an aversion to his cot during the day. At night he goes to sleep with no problem in his cot but during the day if I put him in the cot he acts like I am trying to pour boiling water over him. I know he wants to nap during the day as if I put him in our Maclaren he is asleep within 5 minutes. I was wondering if it's because the Maclaren is so snug (we have a sheepskin and a buggly snuggle plus when we put him in it to nap we cover it with a blanket to make it dark).
Now this wouldn't be a problem if he was always with me but 3 days a week he goes to nursery and they can't use his pushchair so I need to get him napping during the day in his cot so he gets some sleep at nursery before I start to tackle his night time wakings!
So any advice or suggestions to make his cot more nappable during the day?

I remember when our DD was small she struggled to sleep in her cot in the day, so we tended to put her in a smaller confined space - like her carry cot that comes away from the pushchair base or a moses basket whilst she still fitted in it. Then once she got older we put a headboard buffer (soft cloth bumper thing) in as well as some soft toys and a blanket - but we waited until she was old enough for this to be safe - in case of suffocating etc.

It seemed to work mostly.

Also we were given a glow bear ( a bear that lights up in different colours when you press his paw) when she was young and we put this in with her at night and also anywhere she slept so she made the link between the bear and sleep - she still takes this to nursery for naps now (she's 23 months)
