21MO falling from his new JR bed

DS has been in his new big boy's bed for about 4 weeks now and was initially fine. We put a mattress on the floor next to his bed in case he falls (didn't want to get a bed guard to start with). Now for about a week he has fallen from his bed at least once a night and managed to roll off the mattress to the wooden floor screaming blue murder. Should I persist and let him fall or get one of those bed guards. My pregnancy brain is not functioning properly...

"roll off matress to the wooden floor screaming blue murder"

  • Bed guard without a doubt (for the sake of all your sanity) - they don't cost much (or try freecycle)!

why don't you just get a bed guard?

Uh, I realise now that this reads like he falls straight to the floor... He actually falls to the mattress and then later rolls to the floor so doesn't actually hurt himself. Right, I'm off to Mothercare then. I was just wondering if would learn not to fall if I didn't get the guard...

Save your money for a while.

Try putting another few pillows to the other side of the mattress, in case he rolls off there. Put them end on so they block his path.

He'll get the hang of it!!

America - we invested in grobag first duvet set for DS when we moved him to his junior bed (the zip makes it more difficult for them to work their way out of the bed) and we've only found him on the floor once in around 3 months (and that was because he was making an early morning break for his toys..) - may be worth looking into that or clips to hold the duvet down in place on the open side of the bed (again to stop him falling out so easily)

Thank you Chelseamorning, the pillow trick worked wonders and he hasn't fallen since! Fantastic! I knew I was just being slow
