Just a whinge really...jetlag misery!

DS was 3 months when we went to Australia for him to meet his Nanna. He was almost sleeping through when we went (11-5ish). We had 2 weeks of a lot of night waking when we arrived and he never managed to get back to his previous sleeping time, waking for a feed around 3. Decided it wasn't worth doing much about it since we were going to be reversing day and night again.

6 weeks on we've arrived home and he has been waking about 20 times a night (although last night it was only 6 or 7 so maybe we're on the home straight). I'm doing PU/PD as he started to try to drop the 7am feed a few weeks ago so he doesn't really need feeding in the night.

Anyway, that's it really. Had a good time in Aus but feeling knackered and whingey!

Thanks for listening!

God, you poor thing! It's hard enough trying to figure out how to get them to sleep for a reasonable amount of time anyway, never mind chucking in two lots of jet lag.

Hope it improves soon for you.

Thanks

Decided he may have a sore throat (like his Dad) and be teething too now as it is just getting worse so going to speak to the healthvisitor today

Poor you. We've just been through this (coupled with teething and a cold). We got back just before Christmas and it has only sorted itself out within the last 2 days. Good luck!

Thanks

BIOTB, sorry you've been going through the same - glad to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel though, even if it does take a while!

Wow. MiniMarmite, thanks for posting! How great is Mumsnet? We have just got back from Australia and this is happening to us too. I was scanning 'Sleep' to work out what was going on (in case it was something other than jetlag) and here was your post! DS was 6 weeks when we left, now nearly 11 weeks and his sleeping is all messed up. He was amazingly adaptable going over - night sleeping was the same in Australia as it was here. Now that we are back he is sleeping 5 or 6 hours from 7pm, then waking up hourly for the next 6 hours. Should be grateful we are getting one long stretch of sleep! BlameItOnTheBogey glad to hear it has resolved itself...did you do anything in particular or just wait it out?

And just out of curiosity, who did you fly with and how was it? We flew Thai on the way over and Singapore on way back and found Singapore much better (bigger bassinets, better bathrooms for changing, great service, better facilities at airport). Need to start planning for next year...

op, love your name!

I am having the same problem! Got to NZ just before Xmas and dd slept through the first night (thought it would all be fine...) then started waking about 3 times a night - manageable - but then 2 weeks ago started waking up to 8 times a night. Is driving me crazy! as DH has gone back to UK and I'm doing the nights alone. To add to my woes dd won't eat solids (is 7 months) so it could be partly hunger that's waking her but I've tried everything to get her to eat, to no avail....can only hope it'll all come right in time.

MiniMarmite · 20/01/2009 21:22

Just checked this thread again after a few days and it seems like there are a few of us out there! I guess we should be grateful that we missed some of the horrible uk winter!

Things are improving a bit for us - DS has still been waking but very easy to settle (with a dummy that I must wean him off of at some point) and his daytime naps are better than ever. Last night was all going swimmingly - he woke briefly at 02:30, settled straight away but then the alarm in the school next door went off for about 1/2 hour - baby didn't wake but we did! He then woke at about 5, 5:30 and then 6 before going back to sleep until we woke him at 7 - so the wakings seem to be getting shorter and later (hope this continues). I'm going to start weaning him on to solids this week too as he is quite big (nearly 19lb) and will be 5 months this week.

Londonboots - we flew Singapore both ways (A380 for London/Singapore leg), was excellent for all the reasons you say.

Defeatedbypoppers - poor you having to do the nights on your own - I had to do that in Oz when DH went to Sydney for a few days - was horrid.

ssd - thanks - DS is MiniMiniMarmite

Good luck with sleep and feeding - keep in touch

Great news that it's improving MiniMarmite, that gives me hope! Still having trouble here and starting to dread the result of the trip back in 2 weeks - what awaits me at the other end?! I made the mistake of feeding her each time she woke until a few days ago, will prob be a difficult habit to break but I think that's the only way forward....

MiniMarmite · 22/01/2009 19:05

I think that's what happened to us - but I couldn't see a way round it at the time either.

Last night he woke twice and took about 10 seconds to settle with his dummy. Once at 3 - i think from the feeding habit and once at 5 (I guess that is when they come into light sleep). He did start to try to settle himself but got a bit agitated so I got up to him - things are definitely improving.

After 10 days home DS still falling asleep at 6 or 6.30 (can't keep him up until 7) and waking around 6ish...although woke at 4 last night and wouldn't go back to sleep! Has been different every night but he is usually getting a big block of sleep first - we've had everything from 4 hours to 10 hours! Not so bad as I'm still a bit jetlagged too so usually in bed by 9! Good luck defeatedbypoppers!
