PREVIOUSLY SLEEPING TILL 5, NOW WAKING AT 3...WHY?

Our DS is almost 6 months and has been exclusively breast fed. He was sleeping until 5 or 6am from his 11pm feed but has started waking at 3am most nights and is often up again at 6am (5am this morning!) He started to show signs of teething at 3 months but nothing through yet. We started to wean him yesterday and he slept well in the day but badly last night. He's very red and blotchy around his willy, I wonder if this is acid in the urine associated with teething? He seems genuinely hungry when he wakes in the night, we've tried placating him with patting etc but he always wants the milk! Does anyone think the continued weaning will be enough to satisfy his hunger? I plan to continue bf for a while longer.
