PU/PD success stories please

Just started PU/PD with 8.5 mo DD (at bedtime and during the night) and first night was horrible for DH. Just wondered if anyone has success stories to share to give us some encouragement for the night ahead? Please no negative stories, we are committed to it, just need some support!

I did this to get DS2 off the dummy. Took four nights and it took less time each night. I had already taken the dummy away in
the day I think.

The advice in the book was to chose one parent to do this and only they did it.

Is there anything specific you want to know?

Thanks NAB! Don't have any specific questions really, I know each child is different and is likely to react differently (DD simply screamed like a banshee for 40 mins until she passed out last night, each time DH went to put her down her cot-radar kicked in). How old was your DS when you did this?

He was about 6-7 months. TBH I wasn't convinced it would work but saw results on night 2 and it got better each night. Of course, now hw has to have a certain type of PJ to suck on the sleeve but hey ho, it's cute.

We did this when DS was about 7 mths old....the first night for us was also horrible....we must have laid him down at least 100 times with DS crying out but he eventually went to sleep kneeling against the side of his cot!! The 2nd night was better with only about 20 'put down's' and then the third only a couple but by the fourth night, DS just laid down and rolled over (no protest at all) and went to sleep - sleeping through too!!

This worked really well for us until we moved and DS's routine got disrupted, so after months of sleeping bliss, we screwed up it's getting better now tho!

Hi all can I hijack your thread a minute to ask you how it works. I posted on another thread about my DS sleeping problems and have tried CC so far but would be interested in knowing how PI/PD works if you can spare a minute.

Good luck with it though..you are not alone trying to settle a little munchkin at night!

PU/PD is much kinder than CC imo/e.

You have to decide which parent is going to do it and stick to just them. Put baby to bed as normal. When baby cried pick them up, no talking, no eye contact and just hold until they stop crying and are settled. Put down in the cot. Leave room. Pick up when they cry again. Hold until settled and put down. Repeat as necessary.

First night I had to do it 20 times, second night took 13 times, all in all took 4 nights.

Last night DH never got to leaving the room before she started to cry again, but only took 40 minutes until she passed out. Took an hour when she woke in the night, but I guess she was better rested then.

Theory goes that PU/PD is better than CC or CIO because the baby knows that you are there, responding to their cries.

We're going to share the load and take it in turns, two nights at a time as this is what the Baby WHisperer book suggests, but I can see that it just being one parent would be better if they are able to cope with it.

I did it when my dc4 was very young, I never left the room and she was picked up after crying for about 10 secs. It was very very quick (I'm sure because she was so young so there weren't any habits to change she just needed to feel secure without being cuddled). It is very good for most children and much much kinder than CC.

Hi VHK - have a look at my thread about my 13 momths old's appalling sleep. We had a breakthrough with PU/PD last night and so will continue with it...

Thanks DB and Haribolicious, that's good news! NAB - very cute! DD seems to like to suck on a sock to soothe herself!

CarGirl, how young was your DC4? And did you ever have to resort to PU/PD again? One of my concerns is that we're going through all this now, only to have to repeat later down the line..

Second night went okay, less PU/PDs but took same amount of time for her to get to sleep, but less crying overall which must be good.

Last night (third night) was my turn and we had very few pu/pds before she was calm, but I stayed in the room, as per the BW book, with my hand on her chest for AGES. She started to play with her two cot toys (stuffed animals) and I was still there an hour later! She was quite happy though. She eventually dropped off on her own (by that time, I had withdrawn to the other side of the room, where she could still see me). I'm not sure I should have stayed in the room once she was calm, but the damn book isn't clear. BW just says keep your hand on them until they are in a deep sleep. But surely that means I become the prop?

Am confused about this bit, but pleased that DD went to sleep on her own.

(Should mention, we're doing PU/PD mainly to get her to go to sleep on her own at bedtime. Naps usually okay and nightwakings not too bad as she sleeps through a couple of times a week and wakes perhaps once the rest of the time)
