Newborn awake time - is this normal??

I have read that Newborns can only stay awake for 1-2 hours at a time but my LO (3 weeks old) is sometimes awake for 3 hours very alert. I don't think he is overtired / overstimulated as he's not crying/cranky so could he just be a very awake baby????

Thanks!

I too have heard (and have noticed from my boy) that 2 hours at most is the awake time for newborns. (And btw this is still the case for my baby who is 17 weeks, he still gets VERY drowsy at 2 hours awake). That said, each baby is so different. At 3 weeks everything is changing so quickly, you might find that in a couple of weeks things are completely different with your baby. The only thing to keep in mind that signs of over tiredness in young baby are not the same as in adults, they might actually seem HYPER-alert but be very tired in reality.

Just a little reminder - babies don't read the books so if you and your baby are happy don't worry about what is normal. Enjoy the extra awake time to interact with your baby.

He's obviously not read the same books as you!

If you don't think he's overtired or over stimulated, I wouldn't worry about it. All babies are different.
