Transition from cot to bed - do we perservere?

Hi

DS is 23 months and able to climb out of his cot so at the weekend we took the sides off and lowered it into a "big boy bed".

He seems to love the bed when he's awake, but when it comes to bedtime he'll only go to sleep with one of us sitting at his bedside (in the dark). He doesn't seem to be able to settle himself if he wakes up and each morning is waking at 5.30.
This means he's tired (and grumpy ) but when it comes to his nap he only sleeps about half the usual.

Obviously it's only been a few days, but is this normal? Have we made the change too soon? Any suggestions about how to increase the length of sleep would be appreciated!

Does sound like he's not ready. My dd climbed out of her cot a while ago but I haven't moved her to a bed - she landed with such a crash she's never done it again! She's now 2.6 and seems happy in her cot.

my dd moved into bed 2 wks ago and it's taken her til the last few days to get back into normal sleeping pattern. I'd persevere for another few days. Dd still is reluctant to go to sleep but once asleep is fine. Oh and now has to have light on whereas before had to have complete black out!! She's 2.3 btw

Thanks for your responses.

I think the first couple of nights he was cold. Up until now he's been in a growbag, but I could imagine him falling out of bed or trying to get up and sliding about the floor like a slug so we got him a quilt. He doesn't stay under it for long so yesterday we bought a fleecy sleepsuit thing for over pyjamas and he only woke up once (and settled in 5 mins)
