Four year old still napping

My four and quarter year old daughter still needs a day time nap of 1-2 hours. She is trying to stop them as she realises that none of her friends have naps but is often too tired for supper and bath at night. Has anyone else had the same experience?

My 3 kids all took naps during the week days until they went off to school. Still have a 2 yr old napping though. I found they were much more pleasent to be around at night.

I agree threeangles. I have continued afternoon naps for dd1 + dd2 as they are 1. delightful afterwards and 2. it restores my sanity to have 2 hours of peace in the afternoon.
Sometimes dd1 4.5 yrs "isn't tired" but she still lies on her bed and listens to a audio book. She drifts off in minutes......bliss!

My eldest who is nearly four can easily sleep 2-3 hours during the day and then be in bed for 6pm and sleep another 12-14 hours. I'm a great believer if children fall asleep then they obviously need it. Don't worry, she'll get out of the habit as she gets older. My dd1 is a ratbag until she has had a sleep, when she wakes she's like a different child.

My GP has refered dd to a gastroenteroligist as she feels that her sleep is a bit excessive and is wondering if she has coeliac disease. She is due to start school this summer but as she cannot cope without a sleep at least every other day and either falls alseep mid-supper or just totaly decompensates in the afternoon which can be very messy. Ds is only 2 and needs much less sleep than her.

In the US they still have the kindergartners bring in a mat for rest time. Usually an hr or a little less. I think they still feel that age needs a resting time during the day.

I too remember having to take a mat along with me on my first day of school.

I have the same problem (posted in the parenting forum) My son is 4 and very much needs his sleep in the afternoon. I too am worried what is going to happen come september. I have managed to keep him awake all day today, took him to a play gym which he usually misses out on because he's asleep. The only trouble is he sleeps very badly from being overtired and i'm up and down to him shouting out and sleepwalking and such! I don't have any such advice tho sorry to say.
