DS1 is almost 3 and still in a cot....................

He has never tried to climb out, and sleeps 12 hours a night. A few people have mentioned that maybe he is getting a bit old to still be in a cot so I wondered if I should think about taking the sides off and converting it into a toddler bed. Has anyone else actively moved their child into a bed - all my friends moved their children when they started climbing out of the cot which DS1 has never even attempted.

Yeah we moved dd2 when she was 2. Its fine at night but became a pain for nap time as she doesn't sleep just gets up and plays = personally I don't care as long as she stays up their so I can have an hours kip on the bed.

Leave them in as long as you can!!!!!!

If you're happy and he's happy, I'd leave it, tbh.
If you want to take the sides off though, you could talk to him about turning his cot into a big boy bed etc.
Maybe take him shopping for some bedding, buy him a new bedtime book, that sort of thing.
But honestly, if you're all getting a good nights' sleep, that's all that matters really.

yup, we moved our DS when he was 2 because I was in the early stages of pregnancy and didn't want the move to a cot to be connected with the new baby.

He had never tried to escape or anything.

Was completely fine - we made a big fuss of his "big boy bed" and he loved it although the novelty did wear off.

He does get up in the night now if he wants us and comes into the bedroom - but then it's no worse than hearing the screams from downstairs.

If he's happy and you're happy I would just leave him. There's no hurry. He won't fit in there forever.

Neither of mine tried to climb out of the cot.

We moved them because we thought it was time. I think DS1 kept rolling into the sides of the cot and waking himself up and DS2 just looked to big. DS1 was 2.3yrs and DS2 was 2.5yrs.

My one reservation was that they could walk around at night but DS1 had a stairgate on his room door to stop him getting out. Strangely, until he was 4 he never even got out of bed without asking if he could. DS2 took to coming into us in the night but not a huge problem.

My old boss's DD stayed in a cot until she was 4.6 as beds freaked her out. (She tried one once and fell out, only she fell between the wall and the bed and her mother came in to find only her legs and feet in sight and one traumatised little girl!) She was a big child too, for her age and still was perfectly happy to be cosy in a cot.

I wouldn't move him if you aren't ready - there is no hurry. It might be worth talking to him about it though, in preparation.

I second (third?) the leave it....DS was in a cot for a long time - same reason he didn't climb, there was plenty of room and he wasn't distressed by it. Only moved him when my mum bought him a bed which we put up because WE need to sleep in it (relatives staying) at which point he climbed over the top of his cot and aimed himself at it -no choice then

my dd is 3.6 and is still happy in her cotbed (as a cot).

thanks everyone - think I will leave him where he is for now, I was panicking that I was the only person with a 3 year old still in a cot!!!!

I'd be delighted if my two year old would consent to be in a cot! You lucky bastard!

My dd was in a cot until she was nearly 3 - in fact she might have been more than 3!

I somehow didn't get around to ordering a bed and dd didn't seem bothered. It took about another 2 years before she consented to use a pillow (although now she has 2). I can't really recall now but I don't think she climbed out either but that does sound a bit unlikely . I've probably forgotten.

If he's happy and you are happy, then keep on as you are. He'll either let you know or he'll outgrow it!

My dd2 is 2.10 and still sleeps in her cot bed with the sides on.The longer you can keep em in the better

Keep him there as long as possible, makes life soooooo much easier. I'm very jealous.

Ds1 (2.5) was climbing out at 18months (and now climbs in and out of ds2's cot and bounces on him ).
