Don't think there's an "average". Some kids go 12 hrs, others are up and down all night. Are you asking because you think your LO is not getting enough sleep?

at 1 year dd and ds both had 1 nap around lunchtime (12/12.30pm) for a couple of hours and then slept 11ish hours at night so about 13/14 hours in total.

well im wondering what time to put her to bed.

my lo's both had bedtime around 7.15/7.30pm from 6months or so and dd is only a little later at 7.40pm at the age of 4.9years.

fwiw, ds schedule:

wakes 6-6.30
if falls asleep in the morning I give him 10 mins then wake
1-3 nap
bed at 7

but he is flexible, can do 2 separate 1 hour naps if we're out and about, so let him sleep for longer in the morning if needs be. if he doesn't sleep in the morning lunch nap is earlier but still 2 hours if at all poss.

would love him to sleep full 12 hours at night but he's not having it.

1 year old should get 13-14 hours total sleep in a 24 hour period.

greenandpleasant · 25/08/2008 19:59

should have said ds is 16mo and has been doing this since about 13 mo

prettyladybird · 25/08/2008 20:05

do you think i should change dds bedtime?

atm she goes to bed anytime between 6.45pm and 8pm, usually nearer 8pm.
but she doesn't wake up until between 8am and 10am.
do you think 10am is too late.

she has a nap after lunch for 2-3 hour

im thinking instead of putting her to bed nearly 8pm make it earlier so she gets up earlier iykwim

but its handy going bed at 8pm so she can see her daddy and if we eat out at night we can go at 6pm and be home for 8ish
but it would be nice for her to get up earlier and when we are home go to bed at 7pm

if she goes to bed at 8pm and sleeps til 10am then has 2-3 hour nap she is sleeping 17 hours a day - which is too much for a 14mo surely.

prettyladybird · 25/08/2008 20:14

i was wondering if it was too much.

hey if she needs it then let her sleep!!! what is to much?? if she is happly sleeping then it is not to much, it is what she needs! as a dear friend of mine said {who has 7 children} the secret is "never wake a sleepling child"
