Does anyone else have a nearly two year old who won't go to sleep without screaming/shouting for ages?

DS4 is two in October.

We do the bedtime routine. Bath, milk, story etc. and he goes to bed at 7pm

He can be rubbing his eyes with tiredness and in a good mood but, as soon as we put him into his cot- he stands up and screams for ages before passing out and falling asleep.

We've tried the going in and sitting with/patting him thing but he still screams unless we take him out of his cot and bring him downstairs.

He has a one hour nap after lunch and he still really needs it.

What to do? I hate hearing him cry and I worry that he will feel abandoned - but going to him (unless we let him stay up until midnight) makes it worse.

I thought I'd got it sussed after three children, but I'm struggling here.

Any thoughts/advice will be appreciated.

Anyone?

I realise I'm an AP's nightmare. But I still need some help.

hiya - I've got no advice, just going to watch your thread/bump it as I was just about to post something similar - only ds is 15m and very attached. Weirdly, it only started at naptime this morning, but dreadful tonight - took him an hour to settle and the last 25mins of that were screaming/sobbing/finger-sucking, even though I was right there cuddling him.

I guess at least you can stop thinking that would help - it sure didn't help ds
