24 month old REFUSING dh bedtime after dh illness!

So I’m tearing my hair out. My newly two year old dd refusing to allow my husband to put her down for ANY sleep. Naps or nighttime.

This has never been a problem before, she loves Daddy and he did nearly all bedtimes before! But dh was quite unwell for a few months and was unable to parent the way he usually does. He could barely hold her and bedtime was just not an option. It has been a very upsetting time for us all and very tiring too!

He’s now almost completely better and is keen to step back in to his normal, amazing Daddy self. I’m also very keen for that, I’m exhausted by pulling double duty to usual in addition to all the stress a sick family member comes with! But dd will not have it. Loves playing with him during the day, loves the beginning of bedtime routine with him, but as soon as pyjamas are on, she will scream at him and just won’t stop.

I’ve adjusted nap times and the schedule is definitely right. She goes down fine at nursery, but if she knows I am in the house she will just not accept dh. She made herself vomit the other day she screamed so much. He’s so upset and I am reaching the end of my energy with it all!

Any tips for breaking such a strong bedtime preference? I’m sure this is a phase that will pass (obviously a key time for separation anxiety) but I’m just so sad that now dh is better, he’s so distressed he can’t help more and get the relationship back yet. It’s been a few weeks and just seems to be getting worse.

You said if she knows you are in the house. Would it be feasible for you to go and sit in the car for fifteen minutes?

Sorry, no better ideas but lots of sympathy! They can be absolute tyrants.

I would do bedtime together for a couple of weeks and on the third week start doing some little jobs whilst he reads her a bedtime story. At the start just be putting clothes away in the same room, then build up to nipping out the room and slowly increasing time out of there until you nip downstairs. Once she’s comfortable with that then stay down there longer.

I agree - do it both together and gradually withdraw

Donor together. Then withdraw then leave the house. You need to break the cycle

Oh dear it’s that age. Even without a DH illness we had about a year and a half of a massive mummy preference. It’s been fucking stressful at times but I think we’ve just come out of it
