One year old waking at 4am after dropping to one nap - need help & advice!

I'm a desperate mother after advice.

My little one turns 1 next week and we have been struggling with his sleeping for the last 5-6 weeks.

He has always contacted napped on us in the day and we let him sleep on us for 30 minutes to ensure he is in a deep sleep before we put him down in his crib over night. This has been working for us with only 1 wake up which was normally us popping his dummy back in and he would sleep until 6am.

5-6 weeks ago he started waking up between 3:30 - 4am on the dot and wouldn't go back to sleep, everytime we rocked him he was silent and went to sleep but the moment we put him back down in the crib he would cry, scream trying to climb out to us. We left it for a few weeks incase he was going through a sleep regression but we feared it has become a habit.

2 weeks ago we made the decision to drop him from 2 naps to 1 nap to see if this would make a difference. We have seen good progress and he actually sleeps for the full 2 hours when he has his nap which he wasn't doing previously. With this new routine he has managed a few nights where he has slept through til 6am but I feel nothing has really changed.

His wakes up at 6am, he naps 11:30-13:30 and his bedtime is 6:30pm

I don't know if I have made the right decision dropping to 1 nap or if we need to stick to this, is the contact napping the reason he won't go back down to sleep at 4am, I'm not sure what I'm doing 😭

Any constructive advice would be amazing as I return to work next week and I'm really trying to keep it together!

In your position I would go back to 2 naps a day but push his bedtime later

I'd do 2 naps but keep one really short, 15 mins, and later bedtime. This worked well for us during the 2-1 nap transition - we did it in the buggy or car. 6.30pm is too early for bed, he is simply done sleeping by 4am.
