HELP! How do you sleep when DH snores?

My DH snores. Nothing new there. I wear earplugs but I still hear it through my Facial bones. It’s awful & has got worse. I get woken up between 5-10 times a night. I never get more than an hour’s sleep straight. I am broken (both my DM & DSF have died in the last 6 months so I am mentally & physically exhausted). We don’t have a spare room so I want to ask what do you do when you have a snoring partner, have no spare room & don’t want to spend your nights on the sofa which would basically turn us into house mates! And what about holidays? Thank you!

What has he done so far to find causes for the snoring and how did he get on with the solutions suggested? If you can list what he has have tried already im sure people can throw out a few curveball ideas

sopeas · 19/01/2026 18:19

Get a snooze band! God send.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 19/01/2026 18:19

Let me offer my condolences. I know exactly how you feel.

Does he need to lose weight, cos that’s what cured my husband’s snoring?

SandyY2K · 19/01/2026 18:19

Yes...i do feel like using a pillow as in the gif above. 😃 😀

Asides from a dig in the ribs, I use a Bluetooth eye mask and play zen spa music to drown our the snoring.

Occasionally it so annoying and gets so bad, after I've kicked abs prodded...I have to leave the room, because if I didn't...I really would be using a pillow over his face.

AllThisFuss · 19/01/2026 18:20
  1. I put a pillow over my head
  2. I got him to go on Mounjaro. Three stones down, he no longer snores

Same here. And so much healthier for him - no more sleep apnoea.

20thCenturyFecks · 19/01/2026 18:21

Have you packed him off to the GP? Although, before that, does he need to loose weight?

Evaporateandlisten · 19/01/2026 18:23

Has he been checked by the GP?

ObliviousCoalmine · 19/01/2026 18:23

I sleep on the sofa (or he does) after the first wake up. If we stay in a hotel or somewhere where there’s no other option I use ear plugs and over ear headphones playing an audiobook.

He’s waiting for a sinus op so I’m managing to contain the simmering rage, but I empathise entirely.

TheTwenties · 19/01/2026 18:24

Anything you do is going around the problem. I have a snoozeband which I bought for awake peri me but does get used on occasions if DH snores and allows me to block out some of the sound by listening to music/podcast.

What has DH done to rectify something causing you such an issue. He may not be able to help snoring but he should be doing everything he can to not disrupt your sleep.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 19/01/2026 18:26

I would have my ex literally go and sleep on the sofa. We lived separately though!

I can't stand snoring and I need my sleep, so it was the only solution. Earplugs didn't help I'm too much of a light sleeper.

Bippertyboo2 · 19/01/2026 18:32

I was at breaking point then I suggested doubling up his pillows, two soft pillows so not as if he's now sitting up in bed, and it works a treat until he starts wandering over to my side of the bed in his sleep. His very physical dreams, acting out football or cricket matches are another thing though and I can wake up with bruises some mornings.

Ritaskitchen · 19/01/2026 18:38

I use industrial ear plug from the diy store.
what has helped DH is losing weight and also not eating in the evenings after 8pm. And just water.
has he been checked for allergies eg dust mites.

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 19/01/2026 18:49

My dh snores- needs to lose weight. I wake him properly if snoring, he usually then gets a drink etc & i go to sleep!

ThatMintMember · 19/01/2026 22:22

I fall asleep before DH, it doesn't disturb me if I fall asleep first. Aside from that just earplugs. Losing weight definitely sounds a good idea as we could both do with doing that anyway!

Plankton89 · 19/01/2026 22:23

He goes on the sofa / sofa bed. Or goes to the sleep clinic. No other remedies.

How do these work?

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 19/01/2026 22:30

DH got himself a GP appointment and following referall to hospital and a sleep study got himself diagnosed with sleep apnea and a CPAP machine.

He now can't sleep without it as it makes such a big difference to his quality of sleep never mind mine!

EmeraldDreams73 · 19/01/2026 22:31

I use Bollsen earplugs (best I've found but not perfect, open to suggestions..) with a Snoozeband over the top playing white noise LOUDLY. Most nights the combo enables me to sleep as well as hip pain/loo trips/peri permit, but my dc are young adults - if I had small children to listen for, it would be different.

Dh has been to the doctor - I do worry about his health and about me killing him. Doc referred him to a sleep clinic - over a year ago - and fuck all has happened since. That was well worth the effort, then.

We also got a relatively expensive and comfy sofa bed, which I can pull out and make up but I hate the hassle in the middle of the night and he's always SO deeply asleep the bastard that I just tend to grit my teeth. Solidarity. 💐

ishouldgotobednow · 19/01/2026 22:49

Gosh we had this I just couldn’t put up with it. I’d defo invest in a sofa bed if you don’t have space for a separate bed (or a mattress under the stairs etc / decathlon do quite comfortable camping mattresses even if one is on the lounge floor).

I used to go to bed earlier fall asleep and then he would come around one hr later so I could get a few hours sleep until 12/1

He had all the tests done / sleep tests etc but nothing improved its worse with alcohol (even 1 glasses of wine is horrific)

Holidays expensive but separate rooms - I share with the kids he has his own - I can not function without sleep and I’m highly sensitive to his snoring.

I decided divide and conquer and different bedrooms was better than both super grumpy to each other. That’s been the case 16 years!

Good luck

Which ear plugs do you use? Loop ones have been a game changer for me.

jamandcustard · 19/01/2026 22:54

Loops. I don’t hear a thing.

SnowFrogJelly · 19/01/2026 22:55

Loop ear plugs don’t work for me

Did you get the right ones? There are several types.
