Early morning wake ups

I'm not sure if this is completely normal and I should just get on with it but, my 18 month old DD has started to wake up every morning at 5:45. We moved her bedtime back but it made no difference, last night she went to bed at 9pm and still woke up at 5:45. She also wakes up once each night but is easily settled.

Is there anything I can do to get her to sleep in longer? I don't think she would understand a toddler clock yet. I'm completely exhausted!

5.45 is a very normal time for a toddler. My 2 year old usually wakes at 5am, my 5 year old has just started sleeping in a bit later. I’m not sure there’s much you can do about it.

I live with my grandchildren and they are only now at 4 and 6 sleeping in til 7.00 or so.

She's going to bed much too late. I would put her to bed earlier. She could be overtired and that's what's causing the early wake ups. And make sure she's getting enough sleep during the day. I swore by sleep windows at that age. When mine were 18 months they would have had at least 2 hours of sleep during the day and slept for a full 12 hours.. from 7.30 to 7.30

She normally goes to bed at 7 but I put it back gradually later to see if she would sleep in later, but it made no difference.
She sleeps for 1.5 hours at lunchtime

5.45 is pretty normal. Most kids will only do a longer night once they stop napping.

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 18/01/2026 21:31

that’s a pretty normal time I’m afraid.

Onyoupop · 18/01/2026 21:37

Yeah pretty normal and I'm sorry to say my 7 year old still wakes up at this time. At least she can entertain herself now though till the rest of the house is up.

Normal.

Could she be cold and in her lighter sleep phase.

CTW23 · 18/01/2026 22:20

My 3 and 1 year old wake up at 5am on a good day. Whyyyyyy

mondaytosunday · 18/01/2026 23:07

My son was an early riser. If he made it to 6am that was a win. He’s 22 now and still an early riser even on days off. So I think you just have to accept it.

ThatMintMember · 19/01/2026 09:53

I second an earlier bedtime. My son is 3.5 and only ever woke at that time if something else was a problem! Make sure her room isn't getting cold as that would wake her. Less of a problem in winter but make sure her room doesn't get too light in the morning. Any disturbance around that time is hard for them to fall back to sleep. What time is her nap?

I spent years stressing about DD1’s sleep. She was a 530 girl for years and nothing (including paying for a sleep consultant) worked. Like PPs, she’s still a lark at 6years old (but it’s improved)

DD2 had exactly the same environment… but needs to be prised out of bed for nursery.
