Sudden bedtime tantrums in 3.8 yearold

DS has always been a pretty good sleeper and not difficult to settle at night. But on Friday night I had about half an hour of him screaming and crying for his dad, (so I rang his dad and asked him to have a little word on the phone, which helped - and DS also know that Daddy was coming to see him the next day). I put it down to over-excitement because we had guests and he hadn't wanted to go to bed.
But he's done it again tonight: quite out of the blue, after bedtime story, song etc he suddenly just starts to scream and howl and make all sorts of demands.
His dad doesn't live with us and never has done (we were not a couple, but drinking mates and DS was unplanned, but his dad is a devoted father and sees him at least twice a week, so there are no ishoos) and some of the crying at least seems to be acting rather than anguish or at least he seems to be deliberately revving himself up.
Anyone any ideas?
