2 to 1 nap transition & only sleeping for 45 mins a day 😱

DS is nearly 13 months and is transitioning to one nap here and there (still has two at nursery).

On his one nap days, unless we are at home contact napping, he will only stay asleep for about 40 mins.

Everything I read online says the one nap should be at least 1.5 hours if not 2 hours.

I wondered if anyone else has the same issue, how bad is it for him to have just one short nap all day?

They all have different sleep needs. Some kids will do fine on just 45 minutes. It’s only a problem for him if it’s messing up overnight sleep, causing problems at bedtime, he’s too tired to engage in typical activities, he’s grumpy etc. My DS was quite inconsistent once he went down to 1 nap and sometimes it would be 40 minutes, other times 2.5 hours and everything in between. He never seemed overly tired after the short nap so I figured he was getting what he needed, which may not have been the same every day.

Does he sleep at night? Does he get grumpy through the day on a short nap?
If he’s sleeping well at night he probably only needs a short nap during the day. My eldest was never a good napper and don’t think she had a nap at all after about 18 months unless we went out in the car. She did sleep through most nights from 12 months though so I think she really just didn’t need it.

I wouldn't get hung up on the length of the nap. How much sleep is he getting in a 24 hour period?

Agree with the above. If it's not causing any symptoms of overtiredness, then it's nothing to worry about.

It could also be a temporary thing.

If his nights ok, and not very grumpy in the afternoon; then don’t worry. My 12 month old often has 2 30 min naps a day.

My DC3 has just turned 12 months and mostly moved to 1 nap gradually over the past few weeks since starting nursery. Often the 1 nap is only around half an hour. He's up constantly in the night too. He has always slept the least of my 3 children, he just seems to need a lot less.

As time goes on he will sleep longer, he is going out of the baby phase into "maturity"
