Transition from cot to bed

Cot to toddler bed or single bed… when did you do it and how did it go?
My 2 year old is a rubbish sleeper, always has been. Tried it all, including a sleep consultant and nothing has worked long term.
My latest thing to try in desperation is take the sides off the cot and maybe the cot bed will give them more room.
Or have I just made a mistake… any help to an exhausted mum welcome 🙏

We went from the cot to a single bed mattress on the floor for a few weeks. Then added the bed frame after a month or so.
By splitting it into 2 steps, it gave DS the time to get used to the size of a mattress without the danger of falling off and hurting himself. However we did put a safety gate across his bedroom door so he couldn’t wander round at night.

@TreesOfGreen99 thank you! I’ve got a stair gate at top of stairs and have shut all doors upstairs. Did the stair gate on your son’s door bother him? I think it would upset mine but definitely better being upset and safe than not.

No he was fine, it was only locked when he was supposed to be asleep, and we had to accept that despite putting him to bed, he would then get up and wander round his room for a bit, but as the bedroom door was open it didn’t feel like he was shut away if that makes sense?

We went for a double floor bed so we could lay with him to read books etc ans have a cuddle before sleep. We also put a stairgate on his bedroom door but tbh he doesn't get out of bed at all. The first few nights was a bit tricky but he soon settled down.
