Sleep routine

FTM to a 5 week old baby boy. Does anyone know how we get into any kind of sleeping pattern? At the minute we seem to just be winging it every day. Some nights he goes down for 6 hours around 9pm but we aren’t sure if we should be limiting his day time sleeps etc to make this more consistent/a guaranteed bedtime. If we were to do that, it would presumably impact on what time we feed him etc. Does anyone have any advice or know where we can turn to for advice on this please?

If he's falling asleep at 9pm then I would make that bedtime and you could start doing a bit of a bedtime routine around then - maybe ensure he's awake from his last nap around 7.30pm so he's ready for bed at 9.

Other than that sleep is still a bit random at this age! I wouldn't limit sleep as such but I never let my babies go more than 3 hours between feeds in the day time and then left them to sleep at night.
You can also distinguish between day and night by having naps in light rooms and encourage a bit of awake time between naps in the day, but keep everything dark and quiet at night.

You can have a gentle routine of feed-awake time-nap-feed in the day and just repeat throughout the day. You probably won't have more than an hour, 1.5 hours between naps for a while.
