3 year old waking very upset

Hello!

I have a 3 and half year old who recently has started waking in the night very upset. When my partner has gone in to check on him hes not been in bed, the first night he was by his chest of drawers just stood there crying and the second night he was under his bed.. this is new behaviour for him and was wondering if anyone has any idea as to what's going on?

How long is he in his own bed / have the ability to climb out himself?

My 3 year old does similar but is still in a cot. Sometimes toys in her room make shadows that frighten her when she wakes.

Is he sleep walking then waking and getting confused about where he is? I’d stick a camera in the room and see what’s actually happening? Or is he waking and trying to find you?

Their imagination takes a leap around this age. My DC started having night terrors at 3.
