Night weaning toddler

Would really appreciate some advice…. I’ve been trying to night wean my 20 month for a week now and every night she’s waking, having a tantrum and then taking over an hour to get back to sleep. We’ve read Booby Moon and keep trying to explain boobies are sleeping now and she needs to have water, milk or cuddles instead. Is the end in sight? Do I have a really strong willed child or does it just take longer than a week to establish a change? Going back to work in September and need to get this sorted or I might just end up feeding her again if it’s quicker as I need more sleep! Thank you!

Aw I don’t know as I’ve not managed to night wean my 2 year old (though she naturally grew out of night wakes except when teething) - could she be teething? It’s prime time for toddlers to get molars and she might genuinely need the comfort.

tbh my 2 yo still cries if I refuse bf (I feed if she wakes at night as it’s the easiest way to get her to sleep but sometimes try to dissuade in daytime) so I think it’s normal. You’ve got to remember it’s their favourite comfort and the most natural way for them to be soothed.

also be aware if you night wean it may not stop waking, you’ll just be up rocking or jiggling or getting calpol if it’s a tooth issue….

And why do you need to night wean in this quite harsh way? She is obviously seeking the comfort she knows and honestly will grow out of the wakes soon in all likelihood. My DD wakes once a week or so at 1am, quick feed any sleep, but at 20 months was still most nights.

Thanks! Was just getting so tired of wake ups and what seemed like latching for hours. Also trying to change sleep associations and help her to settle more independently. I still bfeed at 5/6am, it was the first wake up I was trying to change.

Ah ok so it’s not just a teething thing. Like i say i haven’t fully tried but have heard people who have night weaned talking about Dr Jay Gordon.

Thank you, will look it up!

Stick with it, she's strong willed yes, good for her! Your reasons for stopping are valid and fair. You'll both get through this fine xx.

Hi all!
Wondering if you had any success @tiredmummy987 .
My baby is almost 14 months old and has no other way to fall asleep other than b**b.
I'm ttc (with pcos) and lactating has messed my cycles, so I'm trying to gently wean him. Seems impossible though.
