2 year old fighting bedtime

I'm reaching out here as a very tired mom of a 2 year old. He is our first child and has always been a good sleeper even as a baby. He had always been put to bed awake and gone off on his own. For the last 3 weeks though, he is a nightmare come bedtime. He fights and crys endlessly but as soon as you get him out of his cot he stops so I know he is not in pain or hungry. He has a calming room, quiet time before bed, nothing has changed. The only way we can settle him is to take him out in his pushchair but I really don't want that to become a habit. But right now it's desperation. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas please? Once he's asleep, he generally stays asleep. Thanks in advance.

Is he upset doing the whole routine? Or just once out in the cot? If it's the cot honestly change to a toddler bed. My DS started fighting bed time and I was heavily pregnant and couldn't keep lifting him in and out so I bought him a single bed, made it special and he's been great since.

Thank you, I'll definitely think about it. I just worry if we do that, he will just get up and play with his toys instead
