17 month old taking a long time to go to sleep

Hi everyone!

Hoping for some help/advice/thoughts

Our 17 month old son has been taking a good hour (at least) to get to sleep each night. It doesn’t matter whether he’s had a 45 minute nap or 3 hour nap or even when that nap was in the day, it always takes him so long to get to sleep.

He’s not crying in his cot or anything (does remind us he’s there every 5 minutes though!) and does occasionally cry out, but he won’t let us hold/rock him.

Is it normal for it to be taking this long? We usually put him down about 7:15, we’ve tried an hour later and makes no difference.

We were lucky with our daughter (now 7) as she has always loved her sleep but just struggling this time and more recently!

ive had this off and on. Usually it is linked to having too much day sleep if it goes on for a long time or could be linked to a developmental phase if it is relatively short lived. If it’s not shortlived (ie a few weeks) the only thing that has resolved it for us is to deop
a nap / curtail a nap. What happens if you limit him to a 20 minute nap?

Alternatively (or my husbands view) is does it matter? If he’s not upset and eventually falls asleep without your input then I would just leave him, as annoying as it is.
