15month old crying in the night

We cosleep with my toddler and have done since about 8 months old. He has always been a bad sleeper but as of recently we have nights (most nights) where he wakes but isn't actually awake he just cries out and wont lay down and if he does he last about 3 minutes and cries out again. Its almost as if he is un comfortable.

We have tried to use a floor bed for more room for him and he can last a few hours but the same thing happens. He is breast fed and will sometimes latch on and other times just wont and just stretches out and cries.

I feel like a terrible mum that maybe I'm missing something but he is the happiest little boy during the day.

Has anyone tried magnesium cream etc?

Could he be teething? I know when my dc arw teething they can be a bit like this at night but seem fine during the day.
