2 year old sleep regression?

My child is almost 2, and has always been a very good sleeper. For the past 6 months he's generally up at 7am, nap at 12-2ish and bedtime at 7ish. You could just put him down and leave the room and he'd go off himself pretty quickly.

Now the past week he's been refusing to nap altogether and struggles through the entire afternoon because he's so tired. Then at bedtime I now have to sit in his room til he's asleep or he cries constantly. And then seems to be very restless/constantly waking up in the night.

Any tips? I've read about the sleep regression and everything matches that I think. But how do I manage it? I can't really sit in his room until he falls asleep every night as I have older school age children to get to bed as well! Naps I don't think he's ready to drop as after about 4pm he's exhausted and has meltdown after meltdown until bedtime.

It’s been a week. If you start doing this you will make a rod for your own back. Sleep train.
