14 month old waking up screaming in the middle of the night

Hi there.
My little one just turned 14 months and has been struggling recently to sleep at night.
He will wake up crying, and sometimes screaming in the middle of the night, and it becomes very challenging to help him settle and go back to sleep.
Sometimes he makes a crying noise while he is asleep, rolls over and goes back to sleep, other times it can take 1-2 hours to put him back to sleep.
We seem to have 3-4 good nights, followed by 5-6 veeeery bad nights.
Just for reference, he falls asleep on my arms at the beginning of the night and then I transfer him to his cot, which had been working for us fine until now, we haven't done any sleep training and I don't feel comfortable taking that route.
He is teething and has one molar and two canines pushing through right now,and they haven't broken the gums yet. Could it be teething pain? He doesn't seem to be that bothered about his teeth during the day and naps once a day, a 1.30-2 hour nap. I usually wake him up after 2 hours but otherwise, he would carry on sleeping.
I guess I would like to know if anyone else had ever experienced this, and if you have any idea why or how to get out of this loop.
Thanks
A very tired and desperate mama

14 months is quite old to still be held to sleep and transferred. My guess would be he wakes up with his teeth bothering him, then it unable to self sooth back to sleep, then is of course over tired and struggles to settle back down.

Calpol when he wakes if you believe its pain wouldn't be a bad thing.
