My 2 year 4 month old won't sleep

Please can someone help or have any words of wisdom.
My 2 year 4 month old who used to be a fantastic sleeper, would sleep 10-12 hours at night and would have a two hour nap. He has started to launch himself out of his cot, so we switched him to a cot bed. He is refusing to go to sleep and nap. The problem is that he is not ready to drop down a nap, for a week now we are in a state or overtiredness and crankiness. I can't even get him to sleep in our bed with us, he just messes around. I've tried sleeping on the floor, sleeping in our bed, sleeping on the sofat etc etc. Nothing. It's resorted to sleeping in a one hour car journey, I don't want to drive around for an hour or two!! Bed times are taking up to 3 hours and then he will wake up a couple of hours after. He will have a night light on sometimes. He just doesn't want to be on his own and is refusing everything. I am at my wits end. He needs sleep and so does myself and my husband.

I appreciate everything is a phase but I am struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

HELP.

Thanks in advance.

Get the Ferber sleep training book, OP.

Thank you TheShellBeach, I've just had a look at this. How would this work when my toddler climbs out of bed and ends up on the landing? We did have a stair gate in his room but he can open it and it was more of a hazard to be honest. We not have one at the top of the stairs of sleep purposes. Anyway, do I keep on taking him back to his room? We have tired this and it took hours. Maybe I just need to suck up those hours. Lol.

It took several hours the first night that we did it.

It took fewer hours the second night.

DD slept through on the third night.

You have to be consistent and follow the book implicitly.
