Sleeping on a normal mattress?

So we're in a tight spot space wise in our house. We didn't plan for dc3 so got rid of all the baby things.
We have a spare mattress that we normally drag out when one of the big kids has a sleepover.
I was thinking surely this on the floor (so no fear of a big drop from the bed) once babe is bigger and out of the moses basket (dc1 was in her crib by 4 weeks and dc2 by 8 weeks old because everybody slept better in their own rooms, and i ended up on a matress on the floor/whatever bed was closest to their rooms for a month or so on top of that in the varies houses we had)
I know lots of people co sleep so theoretically it's safe? How much different could a "toddler montessori floor mattress" be to our higher end price range box spring?
Would it be safe against a wall because surely they don't just get put in the middle of the floor?
I'd imagine I'd leave them in the moses basket until they outgrow it if I did this method. So by then they would be rolling.
Anybody any experience with floor beds?
