22 month old bedtime suddenly a disaster

Hi has anyone else been through this?

22 month old DS always been a pretty good sleeper. Typically one nap a day around 1hr-1hr 30, bedtime around 7pm until 7am. Has been able to self settle for a long time now. Bedtime routine is generally bath, a little play, stories, bottle then into his cot awake and he'd go to sleep on his own.

However for the last 6 weeks or so as soon as I try to lay him down his entire body stiffens and he starts crying. We go back in, settle him, leave and straight away he's sitting up crying sometimes hysterically. Eventually he'll give in to exhaustion but it's an hour minimum of crying, hitting his head off the cot and us going in and out. I gave him my (very flat) pillow and a stuffed bunny a couple weeks ago which initially seemed to help but nothing has really resolved the problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? I hate the bedtime dread of him being upset and us not getting much of an evening but equally he's then grumpy in the morning when he's woken to go to nursery!
