15 month old suddenly refusing to sleep in cot

Hi,
My 15m son is suddenly refusing to sleep in his cot at night, even walking into his room at night he will start to cry.

From birth he's always been a fantastic sleeper and could lay him down at bedtime in the cot and he would fall asleep by himself and most of the time, sleep for a good 10 hours. Sometimes, he wouldn't even want a cuddle, just wanted to be in his cot.

Now, he refuses and will cry, won't even try to sleep. Recently he's been poorly so has slept in our bed a couple of times. We've tried a Cuddly toy (which actually helped when he was poorly but now isn't interested) and we have a grow egg which acts as a nightlight but not helping. He's now sleeping in our bed every night for the past week.

We've tried a bit of controlled crying but I don't know how I feel about it. He's just gone through a leap and he's much better now through the day,

Any tips or advice on how we can transition back to sleeping in his cot would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Is the problem sleeping on his own in his room, or the cot?
If it’s the cot, I’d consider trying a mattress on the floor.
If it’s being in his own, I’d consider sleeping his room for a couple of nights .
