Help - 17 month old hourly wakes for the past 7 weeks!

My 17 month year old has been waking for the past 7 weeks, every 1-2 hours max and is showing no signs of it easing up. I am at my absolute wits ends and am struggling to function on so little sleep for a prolonged period. It is starting to affect my mood and making me miserable.

We have tried CIO and she becomes inconsolable and won't settle after 5+ minutes of screaming to almost gagging. The only thing that settles her is the breast and contact with me. I've resorted to her being in the bed with me so that I don't have to physically get out of bed each time.

I had planned to wean her this summer but she had a really nasty bout of hand/food/mouth, which triggered the hourly waking and haven't been able to break the cycle.

Has anyone been through this for such a long time and have any tips? I am at a loss as to how to fix it (she has never been a great sleeper from 4 month onwards and has slept through on a handful on occasions). Tempted to go to the doctor to explore anything medical but would be a bit embarrassed if it were purely behavioral.
